Ubuntu 16.04 Surface Pro 4 'Touch Kernel' demonstration, testing, and results. In this setup, what works: - Touch - Keyboard - Sound - Pen - Wifi - Video - Bluetooth - MicroSD card What does not work: - sleep function/close lid - volume buttons - webcam / camera - pen pressure sensitivity ----------------------------- Installation Instructions: ------------------------------ 1. Download rc8touchkernel+ posted by / credit to cantenna1 on reddit: https://mega.nz/#!nJJ2DSJZ!4BYSRvzp3hb6NxU5X6_38xFkpuUEmSNvRo2px2TCDqc 2. Create itouch folder: sudo mkdir /itouch/ 3. Create symbolic links: su sudo ln -sf /itouch/SurfaceTouchServicingKernelSKLMSHW0078.bin /itouch/vendor_kernel_skl.bin sudo ln -sf /itouch/SurfaceTouchServicingSFTConfigMSHW0078.bin /itouch/integ_sft_cfg_skl.bin sudo ln -sf /itouch/SurfaceTouchServicingDescriptorMSHW0078.bin /itouch/vendor_descriptor.bin sudo ln -sf /itouch/iaPreciseTouchDescriptor.bin /itouch/integ_descriptor.bin 4. In /media/Windows/Windows/INF/PreciseTouch/Intel copy ALL of the files ending with W0078.bin as well as the iaPrceiseTouchDescriptor.bin to the /itouch/ folder. In your windows install, this would be C:\Windows\INF\PreciseTouch\Intel\ -- in case you are unable to mount your Windows installation to copy the files. 5. I found this handy guide which was very helpful for me in getting the Surface Pro 3 running well with Ubuntu 15.04 -- I still have to recompile the kernel, but many issues mentioned in this article have since been resolved. http://blog.davidelner.com/dual-booting-ubuntu-14-10-on-the-surface-pro-3/ Nice work and thanks to mr David Elner! I did things a little differently since my situation was a little different, but I plan on doing a full writeup at teksyndicate.com. If you have any problems or questions, please ask in the forum at forum.teksyndicate.com Thanks for all the fish! ********************************** Thanks for watching our videos! Today I took a closer look what is wrong with the Microsoft Surface Pro 2 and 3 headphone out when used with Linux's ALSA. This is a rough guide looking at a codec spec, different areas in Linux's /proc values and actually coding up a Linux kernel driver patch to fix this issue. Last but not least we will take a look on the resulting signal with a digital oscilloscope, ... Watch as I figure out what does not make this controller behave normally. I didn't make much progress here. I'm going to have to use a Windows VM + Wireshark on linux to make more progess.

My first and biggest complaint after buying the Surface Pro months ago was that it did not include WinTab drivers for the screen's pressure sensitive input. The hardware supports pressure sensitivity, but with the default drivers, that only worked in certain newer graphics program. My first tweet the day I bought the Surface Pro went to Panos Panay explaining that they NEED to implement the WinTab drivers. Those drivers are finally available so many months later and that means you'll finally see pressure sensitive drawing capabilities in all of the older professional graphics programs that have been in development for 20 or 30 years. Photoshop, Corel Painter, Illustrator, ZBrush... Anything that ever supported pressure sensitive Wacom graphics tablet input is now going to work with the Surface Pro.
