Nitrofurantoin is also known by the brand names: Macrobid and Macrodantin. Nitrofurantoin comes in 100 mg capsules as monohydrate/macrocrystals and 25, 50, and 100 mg capsules as macrocrystals. Nitrofurantoin is an antibiotic most commonly used to treat bladder infections. No matter what your doctor has you taking it for, nitrofurantoin is usually taken by mouth with food most twice a day. Drinks lots of non-caffeinated liquids unless told otherwise by your doctor. Do not take antacids that have magnesium trisilicate in them while taking nitrofurantoin. If you miss a dose, take the missed dose as soon as you think about it. If it is close to time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your normal dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at the same time or extra doses. Some common side effects with nitrofurantoin include dark orange to brown colored urine (this is normal), and upset stomach. Some less common side effects include headache, tiredness, dizziness, and loose stools. (Flash on screen this is not a complete list of side effects) While taking nitrofurantoin, remember it is important to tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have: • Signs of an allergic reaction (rash, itching, swelling, tightness of the chest, etc.) • An allergy to nitrofurantoin. • Have kidney disease. • Have trouble passing urine. • Are more than 38 weeks pregnant. All forms of nitrofurantoin including the liquid needs to be stored at room temperature in a dry place. Store the oral liquid in the original container, protect from light and shake well before each dose is given. Use the measuring device received from the pharmacist or doctor for the oral liquid. Discard any unused oral liquid after 30 days.
