Welcome to our DR650 adventure bike series for 1996 models and on, proudly sponsored by https://www.fullforceracing.com.au where we'll modify a stock DR650 into a serious adventure bike weapon! We cover all the necessary mods and parts for a DR650 and Full Force Racing Components will upgrade the suspension in stages too. The big bush pig, the Suzuki tractor, the doctor... whatever you call her the DR650 has been around in its current format since 1996 and Suzuki thinks the design is so brilliant the only changes made each year are colour and graphics... or they think new stickers will fix the suspension and other major design faults... who knows? We have had a few DR650s over the years for motarding, dirt riding and adventure riding, and for the money it has to be one of the most flexible platforms around to customise just the way you want. In this series, we'll be working with Full Force Racing Components to gradually transform the suspension in several stages to suit various budgets. In fact we are hoping to be able to test the DR on some big jumps when the suspension gets it's full makeover. We will also be looking at derestricting the engine, reducing weight, fixing the ergonomics, tyres, getting a good fuel range, protective gear and setting the big girl up as an adventure bike. First up, we want to establish a baseline for how the DR650 performs so we took it out for a bush bash. Off the showroom floor, the DR650 is fine around town and doing easy dirt roads - the suspension is far too soft and underdamped for anything else which we found out quickly. footage over jumps Even on the road, the front end dives alarmingly when you apply the front brake, in the dirt it becomes a nightmare the harder you push it. The front forks are the old rod design invented about the same time as the dinosaurs so we'll be focusing on these a lot, as well as the rear shock. Bridgestone call the stock tyres Trailwings, we call them Deathwings. They are a soft compound so you would expect them to work well on bitumen but they are only adequate and start to slip when pushed... on the dirt they are next to useless. We dropped them to 15psi for this dirt run and it was like a skating on ice. Now before we start whinging and whining too much, what do we like about the bushpig? She's cheap which leaves lots of money to spend on mods. It's a lot lighter than it's nearest competitor the KLR650 which is more of a highway and easy dirt roads bike. The engine is a super reliable air cooled basic design with plenty of grunt and mid range power, and really starts to come alive with some basic mods we'll cover. And once that dicky suspension is sorted, the DR650 handles beautifully, and surprisingly loves to do wheelies. For short arses, the very low seat height can be dropped even further through a linkage adjustment and adjusting the front forks. And the DR650 is so popular there is an incredible range of aftermarket accessories and bling to turn it into a motard beast, light weight adventure bike, or heavy dirt bike. Of course the DR650 isn't really intended to be ridden on dirt tracks at speed, but nonetheless it's a lot of fun once you have upgraded your life insurance. The suspension and tyres are truly pathetic, but you can still tell the Suzuki does actually handle well and just needs a good pair of shoes and suspenders to become a foxy lady you will love to have between your thighs. First gear is ridiculously high, in fact with that tractor like engine they could spread the gear ratios a bit more... a lot of guys drop on tooth on the front sprocket whch works well, but then the DR can get a bit buzzy at highway speeds. But I can't see Suzuki making any changes to their gear ratios and for everyday riding the standard gearing works okay. I like quiet bikes, but the DR is almost too quiet. I think the design brief for some poor Japanese engineer was make it sound like an electric bike... oh and use at least half a tonne of stainless steel too so that all the weight on the rear will make it wheelie easier. As you get closer to highway speed it gets hard to know which gear you are in because you can't hear the engine anymore. Later in the series we'll look at exhaust options that keep the bush pig quiet, but derestrict the engine and give her a subdued but throaty purr.

The model has stuck to a big, single-cylinder, air-cooled engine that’s proven to be exceptionally reliable and mated that to a 5-speed gearbox that‘s surprisingly capable, even at highway speeds. This made the DR650 a great candidate for our build because it had a history of being rock solid, there are plenty of parts available, and the bike itself is affordable enough not to set you back too far after the initial purchase. I talk about why I bought a DR650 and then show off my rusty riding skills including a wipe out.

These are amazing!! http://a.co/dpfXWKx -Here are the top Upgrades or Mods Modifications I think would help you on a Round the World Trip - ..............Larger Tank - Acerbis 6.6 Gallon Tank (or smaller) ..............Front Suspension - Race Tech .80 - .63 kg/mm Fork Springs (depending on the combined weight of you and your gear) ..............Tall Bars kit and or lowering pegs ..............Scotts stainless steal oil filter -Things I could have passed on - ..............Rear 18" Excel wheel ..............6.6 tank and go with the 5.3 Acerbis Obviously there are so many mods you can do to your DR. All of these are personal choices. How to set up your bike is really just up to you. I only give these items as things I've seen in my past experience were weak links. I'll say that most bikes are ready to take an overwhelming amount of punishment. Upgrades may or may not be necessary due to riding styles or duration of exposure to high levels of abuse. 2016 DR650 my full review and opinions. Sorry for the low quality my go pro for whatever reason switched to 480p. Music belongs to Chunk! No Captian Chunk! and Anchors to Anchors.
In the 650cc dualsport Class I believe the DR650 is the best bike. The XR650, and KLR650 are both really good bikes! I personally would rather Spend the money to make the DR650 more touring capable, then deal with a top heavy bike off road. My Info and Setup Below! Please Like And Subscribe!
