A video about student orientation to online and hybrid classes at Columbia Gorge Community College
SCC Tech Talks 2018 is an event where Maricopa faculty, staff, and students gather on Scottsdale Community College campus to enjoy be a series of live, 18-minute presentations about technology and the learning/teaching process with the end result being a morning of inspiring, entertaining, and touching stories with the power to change student success outcomes. The format will be like the highly acclaimed TED talks. The idea is simple: We want to gather Maricopa's leading innovators, its risk takers, its most interesting idea makers and offer them an opportunity to share their stories, ideas, and insights about technology and the teaching/learning process. Speaker Mary McGlasson, Economics Faculty, Chandler-Gilbert Community College, “Sock Monkeys & Stick People & Economics – Who Knew?” Abstract: Years ago, I agreed to offer our college’s first hybrid Economics class. How hard could it be? Unfortunately, the semester was a total disaster! I was unable to get the students to participate, interact, and collaborate. Half of the students dropped the class. I decided that maybe hybrid and I simply weren’t cut out for one another, and went back to the traditional fully face-to-face delivery mode. A couple of years later, I tried again. Reflecting on my earlier failure, I realized that students needed to digest the lecture basics on their own, freeing up our precious facetime for the active/collaborative learning components. Assigning video content seemed ideal, but there just wasn’t much available for Economics, so I started creating my own Principles videos. I did NOT want videos of me standing in front of a camera lecturing about Economics, so I created the artwork — lots of stick people and the occasional sock monkey – and used free software to create the series. Since then, those videos have evolved into interactive electronic books, available to students free of charge. About Mary: Mary McGlasson has been teaching for over 25 years, most of which has been with Maricopa. She is also heavily involved with Faculty Development at Chandler-Gilbert and with Maricopa at large, having developed and delivered well over 100 workshops and multiple Summer Institutes at CGCC, as well as District Teacher Education “Teachnology” events, and several sessions at various MaricopaTech conferences. Mary has a Bachelor’s in Math & Economics, a Ph.D. in Economics, over 10 million YouTube views, and ten years’ experience working with sock monkeys and stick people to create free videos and free textbooks for students.
